McLean 96 Girls Green won the U18 Virginia State Cup Championship on Nov. 2, scoring two goals and allowing only one in its final game against PWSI Courage 96 Red, a team that is currently ranked second in Virginia and third in the nation by Got Soccer. On the road to State Cup victory, the McLean side scored a total of 25 goals in four games, letting in just one (a PK).
"Due to the showcase format, it's rare in the older age groups that the girls are actually playing for a Championship", said McLean Head Coach Nadir Moumen, who has coached the 96 team since the U15 level. "Winning the State Cup is a nice reward for the hard work and sacrifices that these girls put in every week."
McLean 96 has advanced to the Final Four of the VA State Cup competition in each of the last three years and also took the title at the U16 age group for the 2012-13 National Championship competition cycle. State Cup winners from all 15 Region I state associations (as well as champions of the Region I Premier League) are eligible to compete in the US Youth Soccer Region I Championships, to be held in Barboursville, WV, June 25 through 30, 2015. Region I champions in each age group from that event advance to the US Youth Soccer National Championships in Tulsa, OK, on July 19-26, 2015.
McLean Youth Soccer's girls program has a long and successful history of winning Virginia State Cups: Since 2007 alone, the Club has won 11 titles (including Sunday's two victories) in the U16-U19 age level competitions. In that same time span, more than 130 MYS female players have committed to a total of 70 DI and DIII universities and colleges in 22 athletic conference across 24 states. There was at least one former MYS player on the rosters of all four teams (UCLA, UVA, FSU & VT) in the Final Four of the NCAA Championship (“College Cup”) in 2013.
McLean's current U18 ECNL/Green player pool, which consists of 35 talented young women who train together 4-5 times per week under Moumen's direction, currently has 28 players committed to play Division I soccer in college.
