Julia Leas, a midfielder for James Madison High School in Vienna, Virginia, scored 71 goals and provided 32 assists over the course of her high school soccer career. She was named 2018-19 Virginia Girls Soccer Player of the Year by Gatorade on June 13, 2019.
Julia Leas, a graduate of James Madison High School, was named 2018-19 Gatorade Virginia Girls’ Soccer Player of the Year. Leas helped propel the Warhawks to the quarterfinal stage of the Class 6 Region D tournament, even though she was forced to miss five late-season games due to an injury. Leas played club ball for McLean Youth Soccer’s U18/U19 ECNL team, coached by Total Futbol Executive Director Nadir Moumen, and she has already launched her college soccer career at Georgetown University on an athletic scholarship.
Leas claimed the Gatorade honor after scoring 26 goals and providing four assists for Madison's Girls Varsity Soccer team. Leas led the Warhawks (12-4-1) throughout her final high school season and was a repeat All-State Team selection. She was also named Spring 2019 All-Met Player of the Year by The Washington Post.
According to the Gatorade Company, the Player of the Year award recognizes “not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field.” Leas has maintained a 4.47 GPA in school and volunteered locally as a youth soccer coach and a peer psychology tutor. Every state Gatorade Player of the Year receives a $1,000 grant to donate to a national or local youth sports organization of their choosing as part of the Gatorade Pay It Forward program.
